NDT Facility Setup & Integration

A Complete NDT Facility Is More Than a Collection of Equipment

Establishing a new NDT inspection facility — or upgrading an existing one — is a complex, multi-discipline undertaking. Equipment selection must align with the inspection methods required. Facility layout must accommodate safe material flow, equipment access, environmental controls, and regulatory compliance. Utilities, shielding, and infrastructure must be designed to support the specific inspection technologies deployed. And every system, procedure, and operator qualification must be in place before the facility can produce inspection results that are accepted by your customers and certification bodies. Altair Systems manages this complexity on your behalf. We act as a single responsible party for the complete facility project — from initial inspection needs analysis and process flow engineering through equipment supply, installation, commissioning, and final qualification. Our team has direct NDT application expertise, which means the facility we design and build is engineered first and foremost to inspect your components reliably — not simply to house equipment efficiently.

SCOPE OF SERVICES

One Partner. The Complete Facility Scope.

Services Grid:

Inspection Needs Analysis We begin by mapping your component range, production volumes, applicable inspection standards, and regulatory requirements. This analysis defines the inspection methods required, the throughput each station must achieve, and the qualification framework the facility must operate within.

Facility Layout & Process Flow Engineering Our team designs the facility layout to optimise inspection workflow — component entry and exit, inter-station transfer, material staging, waste management, and operator ergonomics — while ensuring compliance with safety regulations and environmental controls for each inspection method.

Equipment Selection & Specification We specify and supply all inspection equipment — automated systems, conventional instruments, reference standards and calibration blocks, lighting, UV illumination, and support equipment — from our own portfolio and from vetted technology partners. Every equipment selection is justified by the inspection requirement, not by commercial convenience.

Infrastructure & Utilities Design Coordination of structural, electrical, plumbing, ventilation, and radiation shielding requirements — providing engineering drawings and technical specifications for civil and M&E contractors. Dark room design for FPI, water treatment for immersion UT, fume extraction for chemical processes, and radiation enclosures for radiography are all within our scope.

Installation & Commissioning Altair Systems' engineers manage equipment installation, system integration, and full commissioning — bringing every inspection station from delivery through to operational readiness. All systems are commissioned to the technical specification and performance criteria agreed at project outset.

Procedure Development & Qualification We develop written inspection procedures (WIPs) for every inspection method deployed in the facility, qualified to applicable codes — ASME, EN ISO, AWS, API, ASTM, and OEM-specific standards. Procedure qualification is documented and submitted for customer and third-party approval.

Operator Training & Qualification Support Initial operator training on all inspection systems and procedures is included within our commissioning scope. We support your operators through practical qualification and, where required, provide ongoing refresher training and competency assessment.

Regulatory & Customer Approval Support For facilities requiring third-party certification — ISO 17025 laboratory accreditation, NADCAP approval, DNV/BV/LR class society recognition, or customer-specific quality audits — Altair Systems supports the approval process with the documentation, technical evidence, and audit preparation required.

INSPECTION METHODS

Complete Multi-Method NDT Facility Capability

Methods List:

Ultrasonic Testing (UT) — Conventional, PAUT, TOFD, TFM/FMC — manual, semi-automated, and fully automated

Radiographic Testing (RT) — Film radiography, computed radiography (CR), and digital detector array (DDA) systems; radiation enclosure design and shielding specification

Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) — Wet and dry fluorescent MPI; bench, yoke, and coil equipment; UV and white light inspection stations

Liquid Penetrant Inspection (LPI / FPI) — Manual and automated penetrant lines; fluorescent and visible dye; post-emulsifiable and water-washable methods

Eddy Current Testing (ECT / ECA) — Surface scanning, tube inspection, weld inspection; conventional and array probe configurations

Visual Inspection (VT) — Borescope stations, remote visual inspection (RVI), video endoscopy, and illuminated inspection bays

FACILITY TYPES

From Quality Laboratory to Production Inspection Line

Facility Type Cards:

Manufacturing Quality Inspection Facilities In-process and post-process inspection facilities integrated within manufacturing operations. Designed for seamless interface with production flow, with throughput and cycle time requirements matched to the manufacturing rate.

MRO & In-Service Inspection Centres Facilities for the periodic inspection of in-service components during maintenance, repair, and overhaul operations. Multi-method capability for the component range typical of MRO environments — from aircraft engine parts to industrial plant equipment.

Standalone NDT Laboratories ISO 17025-referenced independent inspection laboratories for third-party inspection services, material qualification testing, and research and development applications. Designed and equipped to support laboratory accreditation.

Greenfield & Brownfield Projects New-build NDT facility projects (greenfield) and upgrades or expansions of existing inspection facilities (brownfield). Both require careful integration planning — Altair Systems manages both project types.

WHY ALTAIR SYSTEMS

The Inspection Specialists Who Build Inspection Facilities

Most facility contractors approach NDT facility projects as a construction and equipment installation exercise. Altair Systems approaches every facility project as an inspection engineering exercise first — because a facility that cannot reliably achieve the inspection performance it was designed for is a facility that has failed, regardless of how well it was built. Our team carries direct NDT application expertise across all major methods. We understand what each inspection technology requires — physically, chemically, electromagnetically, and procedurally — to perform reliably. That expertise is embedded in every design decision we make, from the floor layout to the software configuration. For our clients, that means a facility that is ready to inspect from day one — not one that requires months of troubleshooting after handover.
